Bacteria areand a large domain of single-cell, prokaryote microorganisms. Typically a few micrometres in length, bacteria have a wide range of shapes, ranging from spheres to rods spirals. Bacteria are ubiquitous in every habitat on Earth, growing in soil, acidic hot springs, radioactiv waste, water, and deep in the Earth's crust, as well as in organic matter and the live bodies of plants and animals.

Yeast are complex-celled microorganisms. There are about 1,500 different species of yeast. Most reproduce asexually, by budding. Some use binary fission to reproduce.

Molds are fungi that grow in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. Molds are considered to be microbes but microscopic fungi that grow as single cells are called yeasts. A connected network of these tubular branching hyphae has multiple, genetically identical nuclei and is considered a single organism, referred to as a colony.

Probiotics are live microorganisms (in most cases, bacteria) that are similar to beneficial microorganisms found in the human gut. They are also called "friendly bacteria" or "good bacteria." Probiotics are available to consumers mainly in the form of dietary supplements and foods. They can be used as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).
